Great design! Is the white box inlay with the license plate number supposed to represent a white blaze?
Looking forward to the final product!

I like design 6a best, but I have already sent in my application, no matter the tag color.

Why have the hiker? Why is that form the focus with the crest? Why is "man" above "nature" in this tag? This is so backward, everyone i know goes to hike the AT to be dwafed by nature...

I love the design, but strongly dislike this color scheme. Why must the tag have a heinously polluted-looking sky? Any other scheme is better, although I like 4a best.

Ilike the contrast this plate provides. It is important that the plate be interpretable from a distance to have any impact. Polluted sky? Looked like a lovely sunset to me. Humans above nature? I like the hiker -- the trail was built to place humans in close contact with nature, so why not feature the hiker prominently?

I really like the idea of a plate honoring the AT and all the folks who
hike and the volunteers who help to maintain the trail. I think the hiker
does not necessarily need to be a male.....there are lots of female hikers
and trail caretakers. I love to see a female hiker on the tag.

my general favorite... not a polluted sky but a sunrise/set? actually it could be slightly redder as in the last one (with the plane). female hiker not a bad idea...

The colors on this design are not natural...great idea to call attention to the trail...the colors are too brash for the natural setting we see on the trail.

This one is the best. The colors are those of a sunset in WNC, doesn't look polluted to me. You ask why the hiker? It's a hiking trail. Why male? Why not? Make it indistinguishable if need be. This design is the most attractive and most recognizable. Good job!

I like the design. The detractors who don't care for the colors or the design should remember that besides generating some revenue for the AT in the State, the plate will also help to raise public awareness for the Trail. You should want the design of the tag to catch the eye. You might be surprised how many physically active adults that I meet who never heard of the Appalachian Trail!

This tag is beautiful. I MUST have one! Good work designers. My dad, Brushy Sage already has allpied - now I shall follow in his footsteps, much like I did from Hot Springs to Erwin and Damascus to Sugar Grove on his thru hike.

Thanks to all for the excellent comments; several folks have rightly observed that a license tag needs to be eye-catching. It is very important to get NON-AT car owners to like the design. Other NC tags have various shades of green, and they often do not show up well on the back of a car. Those who have commented about having a female hiker make a good point - we may try to "neutralize" the silhouette a bit. Keep the comments coming, and keep checking back to see new designs!

Agree that this is the best design, and the one to its right is the second best. I'd go for either one of those.

I do not live in North Carolina but this is a great idea and I think the hiker could be either man or woman

This is my vote. The others look too wintery or the trail looks too much like a road, even when the white blazes are added. The hiker silhouette is important and the AT logo will add more recognition factor. --RockDancer

1a is definitely the most eye-catching and pleasant design of the bunch. The sky looks not polluted, but very much like many sunsets over GSMNP. My .02

Other than the baseball cap on the hiker, very nice. Did you get enough orders?

More thoughts: I like the style and layout. I prefer the designs with the ATC logo over the trail/tree/blaze ideas. I think the ATC logo works better to identify the AT.
The colors here are nice - the tree silhouettes work - on some of the other plates they appeared inverse, or upside down. They show up well here against the hillside. The burnt orange contrasts nicely with the blue and black.
A distinctive design. The hiker is even going up hill! (It seems like the trail is always going up, doesn't it?). I give it an A-. Lose the ball cap and you get an full A. :-)

This is the best!! Application has been sent. Cant wait to get this attractive eyecatching piece of art on my vehicle. I am not an ATC member. Just your average NC driver who has never seen a specialty plate that I liked well enough to pay the extra cash for. This design has sold me! Hope other regular drivers and non-ATC members can see this. Im sure when word spreads about this project sales will go WAY over the boring, cluttered, unreadable, uninteresing other specialty plates that NC offers. Keep APPALACHIAN TRAIL proudly displayed at the top and NORTH CAROLINA at the bottom. Dont change a thing. Great project and BEAUTIFUL art!!!!
